In the winter of 1995, Stanley B Theatre's founder (Bruce-Robert
Serafin) was finishing a run at the American Repertory Theatre
in "Henry the V". The part was small but Bruce's idea
was big: "Why not start my own theatre?"
Inspired
by his experience at ART, and a recent viewing of an interview
of Gary Sinise (founder of Steppenwolf Theatre), Bruce went
to his first acting coach, Robert Casey, and told him of his
idea and asked him to be involved. Bob just laughed at first
and said "Where are we going to get the money for this?".
Bruce asked Bob how much was needed and preceded to raise the
money for Stanley B's first production (12 Angry Men) in the
winter of 1996. One of Bruce's fellow actors and friend Dennis
Strahan and his wife Ele became co-founders of the Stanley B
Theatre at the end of the first production, and helped Bruce
pick the name of the theatre. Stanley comes from the first name
of Bruce's deceased father and B is the first letter in his
very alive mother's name Barbara.
Over the last 9 years, Stanley
B has found itself in various parts of Boston and the suburbs
performing their brand of theatre. From their first show at
the Footlight club in Jamaica Plain to their next group of shows
in Cambridge in the basement of the now defunct Bookseller Cafe.
From there, Stanley B moved on to Dedham Mass. for shows at
the Masonic lodge and then onto Hyde Park Mass. for shows at
French's Opera House. Stanley B then moved to Boston and performed
at the Boston Center for the Arts (their current home) and also
performed once at Foxborough at the Orpheum Theatre.
